Up and coming events

In just a few days time I (Jinx/Eugene) am going to a conference in Nairobi Kenya. I have been asked to participate because of the experiance we have out here in our areas. So I will be leaving Dawn in Espungabera between the 7-22 Feburary. But when I return I will be driving our "new" vehicle.

Cecilia gets back towards the end of the month from her home assignment. And we are all looking forward to her telling us about all she did. And seeing her re-unite with the youth and children.

Bible school starts 27th Feb. for a week. and this is the first time in the new year. And we pray that all the local people will have good harvests this year. Please pray for regular rain that is just the right amount.

Middle of March we have a team building time away for 7 days. 13th to 20th pray that this would be a good time to share and bind together and also to be praying and sharing together. Satan is not happy that we are making in-roads. We are all facing opposition in one or another form. But it is to be expected. Please pray with us.

The Lord is Good

We have over the last two months been amazed by our Lord, over and over again.

A number of things that have happened can only be explained in and through Jesus. Toni applied for a change in her course/faculty. After waiting for a long time, the response was, sorry but we have no space. Wow! what now all the applications had closed for the year 2012.

We were advised to contact a university and what do you know, Jesus answers prayer. We sent the email application on the Wednesday and she was accepted the next afternoon. Praise the Lord. But we had to go down to South Africa for the official interview and payments.

The next thing we had heard of a vehicle which seemed was what we were looking for. It was just down the road from where we were with Toni in Pietermaritzburg. And it was in good condition and we took it for a test drive. It seemed just great. But we had only about half the purchase price available. We informed some of our supporting Churches and within a few days we had all we needed to buy the car. Blessed I tell you!

The vehicle is in Pretoria at the moment being made ready for our conditions. Again blessed with men and women who love the Lord and are helping out there. Tyres need to be replaced, the front bumper needs to be exchanged for a metal one to house a winch. And there are a few odd and ends that need to be looked at.

Farming God's way

Leighton and Hayley have come and Leighton is in the thick of things teaching and training. We went to Makumba just a few days ago and Leighton was quite encouraged to see how Mateus has changed his planting methods and is saying his crops are much better and getting 2-3 times the amount of food of the same field.

What more could you want? Reading the Scriptures and learning an old truth again. We are filled with God's holy Spirit. Those who have accepted God's gift of Jesus the Salvation for all mankind. That is BIG! God in us.

I was just blown away this morning by that reading. Sipping my big mug of espresso and being ministered to by the Word of God! That is COOL!

We have been so touched by how God works in and through His people. Have a look and see how our vehicle financing is doing on the thermometer on the right of the page. It seems that we will soon be able to purchase a "new working" vehicle. We can't wait to see what the Lord is going to provide for us. Please pray with us that Jesus would make it very clear which vehicle we should get. We are also praying that we will have enough by the 8th of February to be able to buy it between 8th-15th February

We have been blessed again this December. We went to Beira to fetch a good friend. Leighton who was with us around 3 years ago for six months. He came back this time with Hayley his wife. They were recently married and we are blessed to see them together.

Leighton who taught Obedient and Nyarai better farming practices is back teaching while he is here. We will be going out to Siyabuzana, Makumba and Chitsama so he can see how things are developing in the planting methods. and maybe help with a few more ideas.

The Lord is just amazing. And we are so thankful to the Lord's faithful servants who support us so much in keeping us in His service. We have just received information that our vehicle replacement project has kicked off with a great start. Check out the thermometer on the right. And kep an eye on it as we wait on His provision.

It's Raining

It has just begun to drizzel and a fresh smell is every where. Isn't God good? It has been very dry and hot. And while we were out at Siyabuzana yesterday when we drove between some of the fields. The new maize looked as though it was begining to suffer from the heat and lack of rain.

BIG PRAYER REQUEST

Living out in the "boonies" comes with a few opportunities for personal growth. One of them is the absence of facilites like banks and post office as well as a host of other things. However vehicles are allways a source of challenges and that with growth spurts, especially in the area of patience and mechanical skill, not forgetting the make a plan moments.

Our Land Rover has finally coughed it's last. We have just spent a sizeable amount on another engine repair. And now it has broken down but I've called it a day with repairing this one.

It has got to the stage where the repairs and maintenance are keeping me out of what the Lord has called us to do. Namely planting Churches and training Church leaders. As well as heading up the "new" team of missionaries which are coming to enable the work to go forward through disciplship in all the local Churches.

PRAYER REQUEST

We please need everyone to pray with us that we will be able to get a "new" vehicle soon. We now depend on others to get around. We are also looking for a vehicle which is not going to do my neck and back any further damage. But it will need to strong none the less. We are hoping to find a good Land Rover Discovery 2 not older than a 2002 model. Obviously finances is going to play a massive part in our eventual decision.

A wonderful Saturday

This morning began with a men's breakfast at the Glen Methodist. There must have been more than 30 people there both men and woman. Dawn and I were able to share with some great people who support and love us, about what God is doing in Mossurize district of Mozambique.

The ladies put on such a spread for breakfast. What a nice spoil! It was also a time when folks could ask us questions which they had on their heart. One of the things that was clear is that we really do need to get a newer vehicle and one that is reliable. So we will be sending out more information about this very soon.

Then we were blessed to have Martin & Cheryl come up from Pietermaritzburg and we had lunch together and able to catch up with them. We would have liked to have been at their wedding but weren't able to make it due to my father passing away. Thanks Martin cool to meet you finally, we have heard so much about you.

Not to be out-done

The next picture should explain it all.After a short drive. This happened.

The Land Rover began to overheat again every 5 km's. Praise the Lord the Cameron was close by to tow us the 500km to Tsumeb. Where we were able to be helped by a fantastic guy Frank from Excutive Auto +264 81 127 5469.
Along story short; When the Land Rover went in for the engine overhaul. Much of what was charged for was not done or supplied and at huge cost.

The result was we had to get a new head and valves & gasket. The radiator was serviced and repaired. All which was supposed to have been done during the overhaul.
But we are driving again and the clock just rolled over to 400-000km's

October saw the arrival of our anual holiday. Of which we are very often guilty of not taking. Very often we find ourselves with so much to do and can't quite see our way clear to leave and and take a break.

Clearly this is a mistake! We have just returned from our holiday and we both needed it so very much.

We were blessed this year to be able to have Dawn's dad with us on holiday. Wow! at 80 years old he is such an adventourous man.

The holiday started with a bit of a low point, seeing as we were both very tired and frayed at the ends. The Land Rover decided that it would leak a whole bunch of oil from the engine. That took 5 days "squatting" at our very good friends Meryl & Hendrik just out side of Chipinge. It was quite a thing to get 2 oil seals for the front of the engine. So after stripping and rebuilding the front of the engine 4 times. We got it fixed.

So away we went. Through Zimbabwe out at Plumtree and we stayed over at a 4x4 rest camp outside Francis Town. We left for Maun and stayed over a nice place called Crocadile Camp. We then left for Chobe north of Maun. What a dissapointment :-( It was so dry and sand so thick and not a single animal to be seen and no place to stay over, they were all full even for camping.

After a very hot day in the car we crossed into Namibia and stayed in Katima Mulilo ate the Protea Hotel camping site on the Zambezi. That was just great!

The next day we set off for the Kwando River in the Caprivi and went to Nambwa camp for a few days. Boy it's wild and you are in nature for real.

Kwando was so peaceful and such a good time to see the wonders of God's creation. But one evening we were blessed with a visitor in our camp. Just 8 meters away.

LIFT.

A team from Northern Ireland came out and again we were just blown away with how much Satan does not want us to succeed among the Ndau. When they had booked and confirmed their flights all was well and according to plans. When they arrived at the airport for departure all went wrong and the bookings were wrong and there were delays. But JESUS is good and all worked out and we were blessed by them and through them.

The weather for a big part when they were in Siyabuzana was rainy and miserable and cold. Talk about unseasonal. It reminded me very much of Job. Satan had power over a number of elements to discourage Job. But he was faithful and "stuck" to God and did not give up.

Some "making memories" moments

During our regular trip in April to Chimoio to do shopping and banking, which went as usual, frustrating at times but otherwise all well. Walter & Rosie were there in their Land Rover and Dawn and I with Cecilia in ours. We had loaded up and we had our trailer with us mainly for lock up space. So the "help-me-self" shoppers in Chimoio can't help-me-self too much. When we had gone about 80km of the 350km trip back to Espungabera there was a huge bang/clatter metallic noise from the engine. Oh no! What now? We then knew the the engine had given up the "ghost".

Walter then towed our Land Rover with the trailer behind the rest of the way to Espungabera. Well what a trip! And with 170km of BAD dirt roads, it was interesting to say the least. Not to be outdone with just the Land Rover broken. The trailer's axle and springs broke as well and not from a heavy load just the poor road. We abandoned the trailer on the side of the road after off loading everything from the trailer on to our engine stricken Landy and the rest into Walter's Landy. Off we went for the last 45km when late at night by this stage Walter's Landy got a puncture.

I tell you Satan tried very hard to discourage the whole lot of us. But Jesus suffered VERY much more on the cross for all of our salvation. We do not loose heart.

A very busy year

Since the last post in December such a lot has happened. We have been so very busy with our new missionaries who have done very well in adapting to a completely different environment and the difficulties that living in rural Mozambique has to offer. As Walter says they are opportunities. We have had 3 teams come out during the past 6 months to help with the building of Walter & Rosie's house. One from Northern Ireland and 2 from South Africa. Thanks to all you guys we have made a massive amount of progress and the house is nearing to completion.

To all those folks who have and are contributing to the food appeal. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. It is just amazing to see how God is moving the hearts of His people to help other they don't even know.

We are busy buying up maize and are getting it ground to Melie Meal and will in the next few days start distributing to the Churches. It is quite a logistical nightmare but we are happy to be able to help those who are going hungry. Please pray the the actual distribution among the Church members will go smoothly. This is going to be done by the pastors of each Church with their elders and deacons.

We, Walter Rosie and myself (Jinx) took a "quick" trip to Siyabuzana to see how the building of our small little "bungalow" is getting on. And the two guys are really getting a move on. Wailosi & Bhikosi are great guys. We have had to leave them to work on their own and are doing a lot of work. Next week on Wednesday we will go out there again with roof sheeting and get that put up. We are hoping that by then much of the outer walls will be prepared for mud plastering and then an outer plaster of cement.

God is good, even in the middle of difficulties then He really carries one through. We had been having some over heating problems over the last 6 weeks or so. We tried all the small things like changing the thermostat, tied up the viscous fan, removed thermostat. Well with no success at all.
The only thing left was the head cracked or the head gasket blown.

After taking off the head it was only the gasket that was damaged and caused the problem. God is good! it could have been so much more expensive.

Building update

God has really carried us through and sent many folks to help out. The short term-er house is getting very close to finished. The floors is in and the place is plastered inside & out. Septic tank is complete but just needs the lid put on. Lights are in ceilings are in. Now I have to do the fitting of the bathroom and the kitchen. Toilet, basin, shower and kitchen sink with all their plumbing. After that we need to get the place painted.

Our first occupants of the house will be Walter and Rosie who in a bout a week to 10 days time leave Northern Ireland for Kenya for some Africa orientation and then they arrive in Harare on 22 October and we will be there to meet them. We can't wait!

Land Rover problem

We needed to make a trip to SA to see doctors and also to make sure Toni got organised for university next year. Yes our baby is going off to University in 2011. She has been accepted to the University of Pretoria.
On the trip down the Land Rover overheated and I thought that it was just a once off, water was low or something. But on our way back from SA to Mozambique just before leaving SA we started to notice the temperature got very hot every 20-50km. What is normally a 6 hour trip turned into a two day trip.
We have tried everything to get the problem sorted out but the problem is still there. The only thing that is left to look at is the head and or the head gasket. This is a much bigger job than I am used to dealing with. And quite frankly I don't have the time or the resources to deal with it here in Espungabera. Please pray for wisdom.

Feeling better

After a fall which I (Jinx) had while building the new Short term-er house in Espungabera, was feeling quite beat up. Thankfully nothing broken but quite bent though. We recently went to South Africa and I was able to get straightened out and am feeling much better. Still a few aches and pains but much better. Thanks for praying.

Short term house

My head is still spinning. Just a very short time ago there was just a pile of building sand, stone & bricks. 2 Months later there is a small 2 bedroom house standing. Roof on, ceilings in, electrics done, Plastered inside, and almost finished plastered outside. WOW!

It is still going quite hectic here but God is AWESOME! He is doing stuff that we find ourselves running to keep-up. Very soon we will have the final floor put in then the finishing touches can be done. The next few things will just be pictures with captions. so watch this space

Pastor Domingo's house

We are very grateful to everyone who have helped in getting pastor Domingo's house liveable. The whole family just seem to be so much happier. There is still quite a lot of work to be done. In the next few days the floors will be cemented. Then all the plastering will need to be done. But Pastor Domingo said today that once the floor was done then the next thing to do is the ring beam of the church.But we soon hope to have a photo or two of that up on the blog as well.

Aim conference in Nampula

It was a long trip there and back 3100km. We did enjoy seeing all our friends and fellow AIM'ers. It was a week long and while we enjoyed it our thoughts this year were not entirely on the conference. As many know we have outreach teams come during the June July South African school holidays. So I know I was really keen to see what was going on with the building work.

First day of work

Wow it's great to have a group of young enthusiastic guys and girls. They really got a move on with the building yesterday. We got the foundations dug, the stone packed in and the top concreted. An amazing amount of work in just one day. On Monday we will start to build to get to floor level.

Today we get ourselves packed up and we hope to leave Espungabera for Chibuwe near to Dombe. We are planning to have a picnic lunch along the road. We will be taking Nyarai with us who will be teaching the ladies "Farming God's Way" in the afternoon. We will then set up the Jesus film for the evening. We do ask for you to pray with us for that. Chibuwe Church is a very small Church plant and the leader is a very humble old man. We ask that you pray for Zacharias that he would be able to share the Gospel effectively. There are lots and lots of people around that area.

First team has arrived.

The Lord is good! The first of the outreach teams has arrived. They got here yesterday afternoon at about 4pm. What a fun thing being young! They did the trip from Johannesburg area right through to us in one shot. A few of them were a bit worse for wear but happy to finally get here. They were all in bed by 8pm and I think asleep as well. Probably the first really early night they have had in a long time.

Today we will get the spades into the ground for the first time and start digging the foundations of this new small house. We are expecting to make quite a lot of progress in a very short space of time.

We are also planning to get the girls in the team 3 of them, Carla, Laura & Precious to do some painting at Cecilia's house. We need to get the under coat done. The walls are all still raw cement.

Outreach

This year we will be hosting 3 outreach teams to Espungabera. While we were still on home assignment were quietly telling folks that this year was going to be crazy. IT'S WORSE THAN CRAZY! We have been planning and getting organized and trying to do our normal work at the same time. We knew it was going to be wild but BOY oh BOY. But it's great. We are preparing for new missionaries to join us on the field and to partner with us as we try to disciple and also train the Church leaders.

The outreach teams this year are going to mainly help us with building of a new house. So we can start receiving new missionaries. We are really needing to plant more Churches as the requests are forever coming in,... "When will you start a Church in our area". There is still such a huge area to cover and to get the "real Gospel" or the TRUTH into the hearing of the everyday people of this area. Most live out in the really rural or forest type ares.

Chitsama / Siyabuzana

After the let down a few weeks ago when I had gone out to do the final check with the department of agriculture director and we were turned down. We were quite demoralized and did not want to say too much about our next site that we have been trying to get as the site for Walter and Rosie out in the Chitsama area. We did find a place and last Saturday I went out with the agriculture director and we are going again for the official signing with the local folks and the government officials. We are confident that all will go well.

It seems to be just the place that we were looking for right in the middle of 4 Churches. It has a natural fountain or spring really close by. So we are excited and I'm sure Walter and Rosie will be happy with it as well.

Thanks to all who have been praying. We do need your support as it does get difficult at times. A BIG sorry to all who read this site and not much has happened here for a while. I just plain and simple have not had the time to sit down and get the info up here.

Cecilia's house is getting towards finished and we hope that she will soon be able to move in. She is really getting anxious now and so she should. She has been in limbo for over a year now and needs to get into her own place.

9AM Meeting

9am. Dawn, Cecilia and myself are going to the administration offices and we are hoping to meet the new Administrator / Mayor. He was appointed towards the end of last year while we were away on home assignment. He has been away a lot and busy with meetings and functions. And we likewise have also been running around doing all the usual things. Now we finally hope to meet the man and get to know him and also to introduce ourselves and what we are doing here in Espungabera.

I'm quite please with the progress we have made with getting Cecilia's house ready for her. The Bathroom is about half-way to complete. The front stair case is busy being built. The floors have all been thrown. The kitchen still needs the cupboards made.
The "carpenter" and I use that loosely had made the first cabinet and I went to pick it up this afternoon. EEEEK! I don't think that there were two bits of wood that matched. Nothing was straight! So we are going to be delayed with kitchen units. I was really hoping that she would be able to move in by mid month but that, it seems is not going to be the case.

Time really does march on. And before you know it you have to get on with something else. Toni has almost been home a month. Just can't believe her holiday is almost over and she needs to be on the plane on Monday 26th from Harare to Nairobi.

We will drive up to Harare on Sunday and leave her at the airport on Monday. We will then go to Chimoio and get a few more things that I need for the work on Cecilia's home. We will get to see Claire at Velo & Glennschella's. Claire was a part of the Bunga TIMO team and a good friend. So after about 2 or more years she has returned to Mozambique in full time ministry.

Funny thing that; There are many more single ladies on the mission field than there are men! Do ladies just trust God more or are men just too fainthearted?

God's Great

Our God is no slow coach! When we were in Beira last weekend the Land Rover's indicators were working just the way they should, blink, blink. Next thing at the next corner I switched the indicator on and there was NO blink, blink. So a quick scout at the fuses etc and I could not find the problem. So we drover all the way back to Espungabera without.

Just this afternoon we had our prayer meeting and my request was that God would show / help me find and fix the problem. Two hours after the prayer meeting EUREKA! He answers prayers and quickley too. Praising God right now!

Church conference

Just recently I (Jinx) was in Beira for the annual Church conference. As was expected some days were much more interesting than others. But there were a few things to make mention of. It was so, so HOT! I don't think I have ever been that hot in Beira. And it was extremely humid not any more than is normal. But when you come from a place like Espungabera to Beira. WOW!

The Church as a whole seem quite happy with the work we are doing and appreciate our efforts. So we were encouraged by them. Another high light was on during the Sunday service when Pastor Domingos was consecrated. Very special seeing him receive the recognition which he really deserves. He is one of those folks who really does care. His life is absolutely dedicated to God. So he is now allowed to weddings and a host of other things. Congratulations Joao.

I was also able to get a lot of material for the completing of the house where Cecilia is going to stay. And she was also donated a few very useful things. It's just good seeing it start to come together for our team.

We managed to get a 3 year contract signed on a house for Cecilia. It is quite close to our house. It has just recently been built. So we will have to finish a few things. But it is a nice place. The bathroom has nothing in yet as well as the kitchen. Water tanks and pump need to be put in as well.

Septic tank and soak-away need to be built as well. A wall round the propriety needs to be built. and a set of 4 stairs at the front door. Paint inside and out

New site

As many know that at the last meeting I had with the man who gave a portion of land to Walter & Rosie in the area of Chitsama, changed his mind at the last stage just before signing. We decided not to force the issue concluding that was not the exact area where God would have Walter & Rosie live. Thanks to everyone who was praying. We have found a new place which is on the boundary between Siyabuzana and Chitsama. It is about equally close to all the churches as the first site. Ministry opportunities are so vast and plentiful. This picture does not do the place justice but we need to get in and clear long grass and weeds.

The man sitting holding the sleeping child is called "Wiross" (no joking) is the man who has given a portion of his land for Walter & Rosie to build their house and minister from there. Praise God!

Church manse in Espungabera

Today was a hot one in Espungabera and a few of the guys and myself got stuck into the work of putting up the roof trusses and were able to get quite a long way. We are not quite halfway with the woodwork but it was a big part that got done. Tomorrow we hope to get a lot done as well.

Cecilia got into camping in a big way. She really steps up to the plate and gets involved. This was another first for her. She had never been camping. And while we were at the weddings she also got into the festivities.

Well it is not often that a foreigner is asked to conduct the wedding service. And it was my privilege on 13th March. It was at a place called Bundwa. (for those who think it is typing error, it was not at Bunga.) They told us it was just off the main road. Huh! we drove for about 40 minutes to get to a place where we were to leave the car. Then we were to take a short walk to the house where the wedding was to be held. Short!"" Up the side of what seemed like Kilimanjaro and at least twice as far. But we got there. Dawn and Cecilia carrying wedding cake which Dawn had made.
The number of people,...Wow!

So there I was waiting for the bride to show up. It wasn't as if she had to come from a long way away. about 100m in-fact.

But any way the wedding went ahead.

Tomorrow morning

Pastor Domingos, Edisoni, Cecelia and myself are going to see the possible new site where Walter and Rosie could be stationed. WHY I hear you ask.

Just over a week ago I went to finalize the arrangements for the property which we had secured for Walter & Rosie near the Chitsama Church. At this meeting the man who gave the property decided to change his mind. Domingos, Daniel, Edisoni & myself could have been knocked over by a feather.

But rather than force the situation we concluded that this was the Lord closing the door on this location for a house for Walter & Rosie to be built. It is better that we do things in His will rather than ours. So we asked the two Church leaders in the area, Daniel and Edisoni to please look for another suitable place. Which is in between Chitsama, Siyabuzana, Goi-Goi & Mupengo. Edisoni arrived this morning saying that he had found a place which is on the boundary of Siyabuzana and Chitsama.

So I will go out tomorrow and have a look. Please be praying that this is the place where God wants our new missionaries to be. We will leave at 7am.

This is a HUGE appeal for your prayers. As you may know that a new missionary has already arrived in Mozambique. Cecilia who is in Beira at the moment. And then Walter and Rosie who are scheduled to arrive in Espungabera in October this year. And we are trusting that there will still be a few more coming. Then our Ndau team will be at full strength.

Praise the Lord! I have managed to get a small house to rent in Espungabera. This is for Cecilia who is already in Beira. And soon after our arrival in Espungabera at the end of this month she will arrive. This became necessary because we heard that she is very allergic to cats. I have not yet heard what the rent per month will be. But lets pray that it will be reasonable.

We are back in Pietermaritzburg South Africa. This is the last leg of our home assignment before we return to Mozambique. "We can't wait"! This passed weekend we went to St. Olav's Church in Berea in Durban. We enjoyed the visit there and made a number of new friends.

The 16th and 17th we will be at Holy Trinity in Pietermaritzburg. Then on the 24th we will be at Hilton. 25th sees us take off for Pretoria. 27th one last meeting in Krugersdorp. Then off to Musina on the same day. 28th We will leave to Espungabera and most likely sleep over in Zimbabwe and reach home on the 29th.

We have so far had the privilege of meeting so many folks. Also the opportunity of sharing at a number of Bible study groups and Churches. Thanks so much from Dawn and I you have spoiled us so much.
Also we have been blessed with a tyre changing machine. Wow! I am once again stunned by the generosity of God's people. This is going to help so much. Changing tyres with a high-lift jack and tyre leavers with a hammer is a thing of the past.

AMEN! God is fantastic. Recently while still in Mozambique some very special friends came to visit us. Now that in itself is fantastic to have visitors. BUT. When they were with us we were asked if we would go and visit them some day in the UK. And as one so often responds to questions like that, yes sure,...providing we have the extra $$$ (which is never). The next thing they were serious and bought our plane tickets. WOW!!!! Knock me out with a feather.

So on the 24th November we fly to the UK and return on 3rd January. Boy it's going to be cold but very blessed to spend Christmas with such special people. This is going to be the first full holiday we have ever had during our married life, (19 years 9th Nov). We are so looking forward to it.

Hi Everyone,
Dawn and I went back to Espungabera for a week's quick visit (20th-28th Oct.). Dawn's dad Jim came with us and seemed to enjoy his week in Mozambique. We arrived in Cape Town on the 1st Nov and have meetings / Bible studies scheduled almost every day until 24th Nov. At most of these meetings we have been given the opportunity to make a presentation of the work we are doing in Mozambique.

So far we are very encouraged as we are attempting to raise our support base. Please pray that God would encourage faithful partners for the work in Mozambique.

Please pray that we would at the same time raise awareness for the building projects for the new missionaries soon to come to our area. Cecelia a Brazilian lady has already arrived in Mozambique, Beira. She will join us at end of January in Espungabera to work with youth. God is the Best!

Walter & Rosie (Irish) have already accepted the call to our area. Right now they are trying to raise their support as well. Please pray for them as this is a whole new direction for them. (it's not easy to raise funds especially in the current economic situation.) They are due to join us around September 2010.

This is the first of 6 foundations which need to be built upon. Praise God! New missionaries will be arriving. And we need to get housing ready for them. Dawn and I will be leading a new team. The emphasis will be on discipleship. We have not been able to get to do a good job of discipleship with the leaders of the 11 Churches. They are scattered far and wide. As a team we want to mature the local Church.

Dawn and I are in Welkom at the moment. We arrived on Tuesday afternoon. We have been blessed with a wonderful place to stay while we are here. We are staying a the home of Chris & Lee. It's so great to stay with folks who love Jesus. On Sunday morning I have been given the privilege to preach and Dawn to take the Sunday school lesson. We will leave here on Monday morning and head back to Pretoria again.

As soon as we arrive we will need to pick up a few items that we have ordered in Pretoria. Then we will need to begin packing the trailer and bakkie. Dawn's dad Jim will be arriving on Monday afternoon by bus in Pretoria at about 5pm. We have convinced him that he needs to come with us to Mozambique for a quick 1 week visit. We ought to arrive in Espungabera on 21st and we leave again on the 28th. On the 30th we leave from Pretoria for Cape Town for the month of November.

The Land Rover after it was overhauled is working great. But it has a big oil leak. So when we arrived back in Pretoria we dropped it off at the garage and they are now busy repairing the leaks. Land Rover

We have had our Land Rover back for a few weeks now. As many know it went in to have a full engine overhaul done. We would like very much if you would praise our God with us. All the money need was donated and we were able to pay for it. (very expensive). God is good! But soon, 12th October we will need to take it back to the workshop. It has quite a serious oil leak. So praise the Lord this has happened here in South Africa where help is at hand. So it will go back to be sorted out.

We are back in Pietermaritzburg right now. We got back from a visit with my dad & mom in Port Alfred on Saturday afternoon. We had a good rest and a relaxing visit. It was really good to see them again. It has been 3 years since our last visit with them. We also went to Port Elizabeth last Thursday. We took dad & mom and spent the day with my sister Sandy. We went to lunch at a restaurant near to her home. God is really good making the opportunity for us to get together again.

Please pray for the folks. They are worried that we will take too long before we get to see them again. They are in their mid to late seventies. And health issues are taking their toll. Hearing is becoming more and more difficult, hearing aid and grommets don't seem to be helping very much.

Deputation Home / Assignment

Hi everyone. This has been a jam packed time so far. We have been so well received both in the Pretoria area in August and now in Natal. God's people are just so hospitable and caring. We have been hosted, treated, spoiled and overwhelmed with love and genuine care. Thanks so much.

We are in Port Shepstone at the moment and have been to Bible studies and meetings. We have been able to share with the folks here what God is doing in Espungabera area. Dawn on Saturday is sharing a devotion at a flower arranging meeting where a number of non believers will attend. Last year people were openly rude to the speaker. On Sunday I have the privilege of sharing God's Word with the congregation.

Then on Sunday evening we hope to make a new contact at a Church in Harding. And are hoping to share what God is doing with new missionaries coming to Mozambique next year with the use of a 10 minute dvd. demonstration.

On Monday morning we will leave for a few days off phew! with My dad and mom in Port Alfred. We haven't seen them in 3 years or more.

This has been a hectic month so far but at the same time filled with many blessings. Our Land Rover went into the workshop to have it's engine overhauled. We should be getting it back at the end of the week. We are very thankful to God for the faithfulness of his people who have contributed to having the engine repaired. Thanks so much to all of you.

We were able also to have our eyes tested and new glasses. It is so good to be able to see things that are not in a haze or blur. Thanks so much Deidre, you guys are such a blessing! Dawn and I have both had quite a lot of dental work done and are starting to get back to normal. I have been to the chiropractor a few times to try and get my neck and back into line again. They have been out of line for so long that skew feels almost normal.

We have been to many prayer meetings and have had the opportunity to share at a number of Churches. Thank you for having us over we have made many new friends and look forward to keeping in contact with you.

Why have we gone on home assignment?
There have been some fantastic developments in the Mossurize district. A team of missionaries are going to be coming together to minister in the district. Why? Since we arrived in Espungabera in January 2002 God has been building His Church. And Dawn and I have been running to try & keep up with the Lord. We at times have felt so overwhelmed at the hunger for God and His Word. We have been used by God to plant 11 Churches but we have now got to a point where we have to stop planting Churches. Because we are unable to disciple the leaders and potential leaders in each of the Churches.

That is why the MOSSURIZE NDAU TEAM is coming together. So that we can do the work well and disciple the churches properly and to build Christ centered Churches among all African people. We have been witness to see God at work in bringing together this team. Walter and Rosie McCorkell are the first to join up and we expect them around October 2010. This is going to mean that Dawn and I will take on a new role of being team leaders and being the "gap" people for the new missionaries. Please pray for this.

We are at the moment in South Africa visiting our supporting Churches and many friends who have been a major port of our ministry in Mozambique. Please pray with us that as we visit and share what God is doing that we would be able to improve our financial situation. We had run out of work funds in October 2008.

Our Land Rover is at the moment in the workshop to have the engine overhauled, our vehicles take a beating all the time. The roads never seem to get any better but steadily worse and worse.

The outreach team again came with a bounty of energy. Some of the younger guys got stuck in with a building project. We have been trying a little by very little to build the pastors manse. But then all the help arrived.
There was such a hive of activity going on and in no time the walls were going up. A few of the girls tried their hand at brick laying as well. The result of some interest and some enthusiasm is shown in the middle pic.

We now are ready to start the roof. Making the roof trusses, then putting up the roof sheeting. (corrugated iron) But that is going to need money again. So we now are waiting on the Lord to provide for the next stage, roofing and then we will need to put in windows, doors and floors. Wow! God has done so much in such a short time & we have had the privilege of being His hands and feet on earth! How cool is that!

The children were once again "spoiled rotten". They are never paid so much attention and given the time of day. It was just great to see the team teaching Bible stories and playing games and getting their faces painted.

We were also part of the Sunday service where we witnessed 2 people giving their lives to the Lord and a number of baptisms. With hand raised this lady confesses her faith in the Lord Jesus.

The basic thrust of the outreach this year was follow-up visits to 2 Churches we had planted along with outreach teams from previous years. We went to Siyabuzana in weather that threatened to pour rain on us almost all the time we were there. This was a cause for much prayer as we planned to show the Jesus film 2 nights. Edson the leader there with the elders organised a fantastic time. And it always touches me how generous theses people are.

They decorated the Church as well as the tree next to the Church with all kinds of fruit.

We enjoyed our time with Walter & Rosie. It was great seeing them again. We took them back to Harare to fly home on the 24th June. Then on the 28th June the outreach team arrived after a 2 day tiring trip. They were a 20 person team from quite a few different Churches & denominations.

We went to Harare to fetch Walter & Rosie. It was so good seeing them again. I is amazing how much we had bonded with them when they were here last a year ago. We have become such good friends. We are really grateful that the Lord had given us friends that are so similar in mind and heart.

Their purpose in this trip was to check where exactly the Lord wanted them to serve him. And we went to 2 places with them. Makumba which is near Mukuyana & Chitsama or more correctly the area of Chitsama. God in Walter and Rosie's words said He shouted CHITSAMA in the way He made it clear to them. this pic from Google earth will give you and idea. all the little brown dots you see are houses.

They are going to be about 3/4 the way across and 3/4 the way up the picture near the the tool bar. Praise God with us for their faithfulness to Him.

Fetching friends

Today we leave for Harare to fetch couple arriving from Northern Ireland on Monday. Walter & Rosie will be with us for almost 3 weeks and will be seeking God's face and answer to prayer as to their exact placement as missionaries. We can't wait to see them again. They were part of last years outreach team.

Egon who is from Brazil will be going with for the drive to Harare to see a bit of Africa, (not a whole lot to see along the road) but it is his first time in Africa.

Tuesday I took Leighton to Beira and we arrived there at about 10.30pm. He is flying out of Beira today 4th and then out of Johannesburg on the 5th back to New Zeeland. Please pray for a good time for him as he gets back in contact with family & friends. Also that he would soon find suiteable employment.

We enjoyed having him with us and have benifitted from his farming knowledge.

Outreach 2009

The outreach to Espungabera 2009 is going to be taking place from 27th June (leaving Pretoria) and arriving in Espungabera 28th June. Until departure 11th June (arrival in Pretoria) 12th July.

This year we are planning to do some building at the Espungabera Church, mainly to the manse so we will soon be able to move the pastor and his family out of the Church half completed building. We will also be doing some maintaince work to the mission house.

3-5th July we will be out in the bush camping and then again 7-9th. We will be visiting Siyabuzana and Chitsama. The focus this year will be on encouraging the local Churches with teaching. One of the main topics will again be about monogomus marriages. We will also be trying to encourage the Church leadership to identify and encourage young men especially to marry ONE wife but to also go into leadership training in the Church.

The ladies will again be doing hand crafts but will also be taught about not accepting that their husbands take more wives. As all ways we will be showing the Jesus film two nights at each place.

Returning FRIENDS

We so blessed, we so blessed, tra-la-la-la, tra-la-la-la! Walter and Rosie who came to Espungabera a year ago and were part of the outreach team 2008 are coming to visit from the 8th to 24th June. We have kept in regular contact with them. They are coming back to seek confirmation of their calling to Espungabera area. We will be going with them to two places we as a mission AIM have pinpointed as important areas to be developed. And they are going to be praying that God would make is calling clear to them and also as to which of the two areas He wants them.

Please would you also pray that God would make his will clearly known to them about this calling and give them peace in their hearts. We have been wanting help for so long but it must be God's doing not ours. The weekends of 12-14th and 19-21st is when we will go to these two places, (Makumba & Chitsama areas.)

Brazilian Dentist,

Egon is a retired Brazilian dentist. It has been quite a lot of fun having him around. Especially as he speaks "no" English. So I have had a personal Portuguese teacher for a week at Bible school. Egon went to the Bible school with me to experience rural Mozambican life and also to teach dental hygiene at the local school there.

There was just so much new "stuff" for him to see and be part of. I think he had quite a wake up call as to how a large part of Africa lives. He mentioned over and over that they never see that side of life on TV back home. But I guess neither do many of us.

He and I will be going on Monday to Catholic mission station about 20km's from Espungabera and he is scheduled to teach there at the clinic and the little school about dental hygiene. He will also be teaching at a few other places in and around Espungabera until his return to Chimoio around the 15-16th June. He will then also go and visit some other areas of Mozambique. Please keep him in your prayers as this rural African "stuff" is quite a culture shock for him.

Thursday 21st saw us go to Chimoio to do our shopping and banking and also to get Egon the retired dentist from Brasil. Leighton our resident Kiwi and "agricultural specialist" went with us to get rid of a bit of "cabin fever". And on Thursday evening he was cold and shivering and came down with Malaria. We were able to start treatment right away. And when on Friday after 1pm we went to fetch him at a friends house to go back to Espungabera it was very doubtful if he was going to be able to travel. But I suppose the younger you are the stronger you are! (alas!) Well he wanted to come to Espungabera and not spend another day in Chimoio. By Monday morning he was feeling much better but is still a bit weak. But every day he he is getting back to his old self. Praise the Lord!

We will be going to Goi-Goi this Sunday for Church. The Church there is led by a young man 24 years old Phienas. He was elected as the leader after the death of our much loved old "saint" Baba Williamo.

Phienas is a one of those young guys that is just growing in leaps and bounds. During Bible School week we normally have an open Bible study on Wednesday evenings. During that time what often happens is that folks come forward to be prayed for. Normally for health reasons. Phienas came forward and blew me away with his prayer request. "That God would enable him not to be so shy and to be able to lead the Church well espically with his preaching". A sure sign that he maturing.

At the same time, in going to Goi-Goi we have the opportunity to show our new pastor Domingo where the Church is. Seeing that we will soon be away for a few months.

Bible school a blessing

The week just passed 25th to 29 May was well attended by the students,(Church leaders). As many of you know that the Mossurize district is one of the main training areas for witchdoctors in Southern Africa if not a large portion of Africa. So the teaching on Jude in the New Testament was particularly helpful to the leaders. Although most of the leaders come from a background of "traditional religion" they were quite unaware of what to look out for and what some of the characteristics of of false teachers and distorter s of the faith are.

What a blessing it was to see how they they enjoyed Jude but also their comments about in the past they had just skimmed over Jude as it "only had one chapter & therefore of not much substance" according to them. So when we got down to the nuts and bolts of Jude they were quite shocked! But they found it very helpful.

Bible school.

Bible school is going to be from 25th to 29th of this month. For some of the students it will be the last course. I will need to present them with certificates in recognition of their studies. They have been learning and doing very well since 2003. All are leading Churches and have ministries of their own going now. 2Tim 2:2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

So now I will be focusing on the newer students and also be looking at finding new leaders hopefully coming up through the local Church where the trained guys have been teaching.

Please pray for God's provision with us. Ask that He will send rain to fill our water tanks or that the town water would work and the tanks be filled that way. However God is able to fill them. Town water has made an appearance not even 10 days this year so far and that for only a few hours at a time.

Up and comming events.

This week which is about to "attack" us with all it's challenges and things which God has prepared for us is going to be quite busy. 11th through 16th is going to be a week where lots of final preparation needs to take place. Much maintenance needs to be done around the house and also the generator has seized. This is the one which we have just had replaced. It is already sorely missed as we are experiencing power cuts daily and for long periods at a time. End of June sees the outreach team come and we need to be ready for that. The gas deep freezer has stopped working and needs to sorted out as well. With no "town" electricity keeping frozen foods is difficult. Pray that I can get both the generator and the deep freezer working by the time the outreach team comes.

But before they arrive we are going to be receiving a "retired" German dentist who had spent around 30 years in Brazil. He will be arriving on the 18th and will be spending a month with us. He will be going to many Church groups and also to the hospital and a few of the clinic's and will give lessons on oral hygiene. Lets pray that he is well received and is able to have a meaningful time and mostly a chance to share the Gospel.

I firstly need to say sorry to those who keep up with us via this blog. I have not kept it up-to-date over the last few weeks. This has been a very full, testing and mixed up period.

Dawn's mom was very ill and we were called urgently to Pietermaritzburg. She passed away on the 20th of April. Dawn's dad over the same period and a little earlier had a heart attack and a week later a week later his gall bladder removed and a week after that had a hernia operation done, which got infected as well and caused problems. But he is doing much better now. So thanks to all of our dear friends who were praying.

We have just heard that the building project has been registered. So now we as a mission can start raising funds for the building of the Espungabera houses for the new missionaries. Update about Dawn's dad & mom

Thankfully Jim was released today but has to be back in the morning for further tests and check-up so he is out of immediate dangers but not in the clear yet.
Then Dawn's mom Dorothy was diagnosed a short while ago with cancer in her throat which was the cause of what seemed to be a non stop cold. She had her first radiation treatment on 12th of March and is scheduled for a cat scan tomorrow to check the status & to decide if they will start chemotherapy. Please keep them in your prayers as well.

Dawn's dad Jim was taken to Hospital last night with another heart attack and was quite confused. He has all sorts of scans etc. done. He has now been placed in High Care and is complaining of the heart burn feeling. He says it's very sore. This is about the 4th or 5th in just over a year.

What's our itinerary like from August to end of January?

In August we plan to be in the Pretoria and Johannesburg area for most of the month. September we plan to be in Natal. October sees us spending much of our time in the Free State. November we have planned to be in the Cape. We would even now appreciate your prayers for all the organising that needs to be done so we do not sit around wasting time.
